My favorite natural hair products

Over the years there have been tons of natural hair products in the market, this has made a lot of girls confused about which products to get. They have been wondering which product will work for them and grow their hair. To be honest, since I started my hair journey, I have used only a few products and I have been using them over the years. Even though products aid in our hair journey, in my opinion I think we should not focus more on the products but how we handle our hair, what we put into our bodies before considering the products to use.

A lot of people ask me the kind of products I use for my hair, I must admit that I use the basic products and today I am going to share with everyone what I have been using since I started my hair journey.

I have used this shampoo since I was relaxed, transitioning and natural. I noticed that after washing my hair with it,it replaces it with moisture and shine. It cleans your scalp from built up products

I started using this organic shampoo and i run out of the cantu shea butter moisturizing shampoo. It soothes your scalp and leaves some moisture in your hair. Some moisturizers rips off your hair of its nature moisture but this replaces some moisture after cleaning your hair. All ingredients are organic and it also contains tea tree and aloe leaf extract.

Conditioner is another must have natural hair product. I use two conditioners depending on how my hair feels. I used this conditioner when my hair needs some thickness. The smell is great and leaves your hair soft and shiny. This conditioner is blended with Vitamin B7 bioton. It infuses nutrients into your strands and also the collagen and hydrolyzed wheat protein creates an appearance of thicker, fuller and healthier looking hair.

I also use this conditioner for deep conditioning my hair. It repairs damaged hair and helps restore moisture

It is important that after washing your hair you apply some leave-in conditioner to your hair to provide intense moisture into your hair. Applying it also makes your hair manageable when de-tangling. This leave-in conditioner is great for damaged hair, dry hair and repairs split ends.

This is my current leave-in conditioner. It instantly moisturizes your hair, defines curls and controls frizz.

These are the products I have been using. What are the products you use and how has it helped your hair?

  • Drink from a bottle

I don’t remember the last time a drunk water from a glass, unless i’m eating out or probably forgot to carry my bottle along with me. I have a couple of bottles I use for drinking. This makes it easier to track my water intake and motivates me to drink more. Getting yourself a water bottle will help you make sure you are getting the recommended amount of water everyday. Some of the bottles comes with measurements.

  • Drink water first thing in the morning

Fruits like water melons, oranges, pineapples, plum, peach, grapefruit have great amount of water in them. You can blend your fruits into a juice or eat it as it is. Another thing is you get extra nutrients from consumption of the fruits as well.

  • Add flavors

Infusing some flavors into your drinking water can be fun. You can add some berries or fruits and herbs. Strawberries, Lime or lemon, mint leaves, cucumber, Pineapple and just a few to mention. These are also packed with a whole lot of healthy benefits.

As we rock our natural hair in all the styles we can, there are times when we feel like getting some braids or other hair styles that will protect our hair for a while to save us from all the natural hair troubles. • Moisturize

So depending on what you want to use to moisturize, you can decide to use a moisturizer or a leave-in conditioner. Spray some water in your hair and begin de-tangling by separating your hair with your fingers (finger de-tangling) before using the wide tooth comb to reduce breakage. How to deep condition natural hair (simple method)

Do you feel your hair is dry and brittle? When was the last time you had a deep conditioning treatment or have you ever done a deep conditioning treatment?

Deep conditioning should be part of your regular hair care regimen as a natural hair girl, because of the benefits your hair will achieve from it. It will add shine to your hair, add moisture, strengthen your hair strands and many more benefits.

Here are some simple steps on how to deep condition your hair

  • Wash your hair

The first step to deep conditioning your hair is to clean it from built up products and dirt. When your hair is clean, it is easier for products to penetrate through your hair and achieve the benefit of the product. Use your favorite shampoo or the one that works best for your hair.

  • Add deep conditioner

Now it is time for you to add your deep conditioner but first you should know what kind of product you are putting in your hair. If you aren’t sure of the best products you can try out a few and then later figure out which one works best for you. If you want to be extra, you can add some oils or eggs to your deep conditioner. There are also some homemade or DIY deep conditioners you can make at home.

  • How to apply

Cover the whole of your hair with the conditioner. If your hair is long or thick, it will be best if your section your into about four to eight parts and apply the product to each of them, the comb your hair from tip to scalp and not vice versa and remember to use a wide tooth comb. Combing your hair will evenly distribute the product to your hair. Then when you have applied the product, now put your hair into twists.

  • Wear a plastic cap

The next step is to put on a plastic cap, this helps lock moisture into your hair and also keeps your hair warm to open up your hair follicles so the conditioner can penetrate through it. It will be great if you apply some heat whiles you have the plastic cap on. You can sit under a dryer or use a hand dryer depending on what you have. I usually sit in the sauna for about 15 minutes. You can keep the plastic cup on for about 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Rinse conditioner from your hair

After you’ve had the plastic cup on for the required time, you can rinse your hair. Remember to rinse your hair with cold water not hot, this is so that the nutrients from the product will still remain in your hair.

Yaaaaaayyyy, now you are done deep conditioning your hair, isn’t it simple.

You may ask how often you should do this, well I do mine on every second wash day or when I feel my Hair needs it. So you choose.

Enjoy reading and hope you will be doing a deep conditioning treatment on your next wash day.

Natural hair essential tools you need

Have you decided to join the natural hair gang yet or you are already in? If you have decided to join, welcome and if you are already in hope you are enjoying it. For the sake of those of you who have joined or are joining the team, I like to share with you some essential tools needed in order to make your hair journey fun and hair easy to manage and maintain.

That is why I have put together in this post, some of the tools you will need. Sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy reading.

Combs are very essential when it comes to managing your kinky natural hair, you might be like, of course who doesn’t know, yeah that’s true everyone one knows we all need combs, but have you thought of the right kind of combs to use? If yes Great!, if your answer is no, I am here for you. Wide tooth De-tangling comb is your number 1 comb to consider, it makes de-tangling less painful and also reduces breakage. Rat tail comb is another must have comb when it comes to parting of your hair and you want a defined line.

Another important thing that shouldn’t be forgotten is a satin bonnet or scarf. Using a satin bonnet when going to bed would keep your hair moisturized and also give you a better looking and healthier hair and keeps your hair in place. Some people also opt for a satin pillow case and that is fine too if you only want to retain moisture in your hair.

This plays a role when deep conditioning your hair. plastic caps, when used during deep conditioning allows your hair to hold in moisture, because heat from your body or specifically your head helps open up your hair follicles to absorb ingredients from your deep conditioner.

These are great if you love to rock your afro big. It makes fluffing your hair easy.

Every now and then, as a natural hair babe, it is important to oil your scalp and do your hot oil treatments. Applicator bottles are very handy for those because of its pointed tip.

A spray bottle is a good tool for spraying water into your when de-tangling or moisturizing your hair. You can mix some moisturizing or conditioning products with water and spray your hair with it. Think about how easy this sounds.

When buying hair bands, look out for the metal free ones. This is because, those ones with metals will snag your hair and cause breakage.

You know how annoying it can be when you want to work with one section of your hair but the rest of it want to join, that is why you need hair clips to keep those sections you aren’t working with away to make your work much easier.

Hey don’t forget your scissors, you would need them to trim splits ends.

These are some of the tools basic but required tools I personally use to maintain and manage my hair, if you have any favorites I have left out, please share in the comment box.

Have a great natural hair journey!!!!!!

Real ways to grow your natural hair

Its amazing how growing kinky natural hair has become a thing of this century. Its excites me how most girls have come to the point where they are willing and able to embrace their own natural hair with no shame, because there were or they are a lot of myths or negative thoughts about kinky natural hair, even with me it took me some courage and change of mind to be able to transition from relaxed to kinky natural hair.

Read my previous post to read my transitioning story.

I know most girls are thinking of joining the natural hair team but are wondering how they will get through it and also some are already on this journey but it been quite tough for them because they think their hair is not growing or their hair is not retaining length.

If you belong to this category, trust me you are not alone, that why I have put together some of the proven tips and the things I have been doing to accelerate my hair growth.

Here are some tips you for you

  • Remember your hair grows from the inside of your body

When it comes to growing of hair, most people think of the outside factors only, like the products to use and how to take care of their hair and that is not bad but to grow a healthy and long hair in general you must first consider the inside factors because your hair grows from the inside of your body. So you must consider what you put inside your body, because your hair needs essentials nutrients, minerals and a lot of water to grow healthy. Believe me you can buy all the expensive and effective natural hair products but if you do not feed your body this important nutrients your hair will not glow or flourish from the outside. So consider drinking a lot of water to moisturise your hair from the inside, also incorporate foods rich in proteins and omega-3 fatty acids in your diets and your hair will be smiling with you.

  • Exercisssseeeee

You are wondering how exercise will help you with hair growth right? Exercise help in blood circulation and increases your metabolism. I noticed that when I go to the gym 2 to 3 times a week for a month and take my braids off, the growth is massive than when I don’t exercise. So yeah exercising helps boost your hair growth.

  • Know your hair type

So now that you know how to take care of your hair from the inside and also move your body, the next step is to know your hair type. This is important because this will help your know how to maintain, the products your hair needs and how to take care of your hair. Finding your hair type can be very tricky but once to are able to determine it the process of maintaining your hair becomes even more easier, but there are some basic tips that works for all hair types no matter what your hair texture is. So now lets move on to the next tip.

  • How to wash your hair

It is easier to wash your hair when you are starting to grow out your natural hair but after it grows to some point washing it becomes a little bit of a struggle because shrinkage occurs and the hair is easily tangled. In order to make things easier for you, it is important to wash your hair in sections. Put each section into a twist, the length of your hair will determine the number of twist to have, it could be four big twist or eight or as much as you want.

  • Be patient when de-tangling your hair

I have noticed that most people don’t have patience when it comes to combing or de-tangling of their hair. They will just pick up any comb and start to comb their in rough manner and after that they complain of breakage and how painful it is the comb your hair. If you want to retain length then you have to stop de-tangling your hair like that. The best way to de-tangle your hair is to put it in sections and spray some water on it in order to make it soft and easy to manage, then comb from tip to the scalp with a wide tooth comb to reduce much shedding.

  • Moisturise Your Hair

Dry things break easily. So if your want your hair to be free from breakage, you need to keep it moisturised both from the inside by drinking lots of water as I have already said and from the outside by apply moisturising products that works best for your hair. There are a lot of products out there and it is important to now the ones that works best for you. When moisturising it is also important to focus on the ends of your hair because they are the oldest and they become fragile and need much care so you can keep them and retain length even though you sometimes have to trim when the need arises.

Deep Conditioning
Incorporating deep conditioning to your hair regimen, will help prevent your hair from breakage. This is the process where you leave the conditioner in your hair for about 15-30 minutes so the conditioner can penetrate through your hair strands. It even more efficient when some kind of heat is applied. Deep conditioning helps reduce breakage, split end and strengthens your hair.

Protective Styling

Protective hair styles helps in low manipulation of your. If you want to see growth or retain length, low manipulation of your hair is important. Avoid too much combing and styles that are too tight for your hair. Twists, crochet braids, braids, buns keeps your hair bounded for a while or as long as you have them on, braid outs also helps.

1 year hair growth with shrinkage

Less heat

Talking about heat, I haven’t applied heat to my hair since I became natural. It reduces damage to your hair especially to the ends. But if you can’t stay away from it, avoid it as much as possible.

Be patient

You have to understand that there are so many factors in hair growth and also our hair grows at different paces. The fact that someone’s hair grows faster doesn’t mean yours is not growing, follow the tips and be patient with the process and you will notice how happy you and your will be.

There are still a few tips I am not able to cover in this post, I will write those in my next post. Don’t miss those tips because they all come together to help your hair smiley .

Thanks for reading and see you again!!!

Why I transitioned from thin relaxed hair to thick healthy natural hair

If someone had told me I would go natural again, I would have argued with great passion. I have always been a girl who is passionate about hair and loves to have a long healthy hair.

Once upon a time a had natural hair, that was about when I was 17 years old, after high school. During those times, it was quite difficult for me to manage my hair, because I didn’t have any knowledge of how to do the natural hair thingy. The whole natural hair trend wasn’t in vogue then, no one embraced it and it was seen as ugly, unkept and there were so many myths about it. Everyone was waiting to complete high school, come home and get their hair relaxed, mostly because that was what we have been exposed to. There wasn’t much education or information on kinky natural hair. Due to that, I could not manage my hair texture and detangling after I had my braids were off was super painful and also when braiding, parting of the hair was another issue all together.

I remember when people will tease me about my hair not growing because I always had shrinkage and the growth wasn’t seen that much. The texture of my hair also seemed to be horrible because people had this curly type of hair pattern but mine was not defined with no pattern and looked though. I could not embrace my natural hair during those days, because I thought I had the worse hair ever.

As at that time I didn’t know any styling methods or how to maintain my hair, so I always had them braided or fix some weaves. I went on this journey for about a year and I was like no this is not for me. There was a day when I had taken my braids off and I had to go to work the next day, there was no time to get another braids on, trust me it would have been much better if I knew some of the styling methods I know now but I didn’t, so I had to go to work with my “messy” hair. It was horrible at that time because of my hair texture, I did all the combing I knew but my hair won’t cooperate. After work that day, I said to myself I am done with keeping my natural hair, it is time to get it relax and be free, lol.

So the relaxed hair journey began, I had relaxed hair for several years but I couldn’t retain length, I would go to professional hair stylists to help and give me some tips on what I could do to get my hair back on track but nothing worked. It got to a point where I had to cut my hair to a very short length and start all over again. I began to notice some improvement in the growth of my hair. After a year on that journey, I moved from Ghana to Finland. That was in 2014.

my relaxed hair after I moved to Finland

When I moved to Finland

In Finland, I had to be in charge of my hair because there was no hair stylish to make my hair. Unlike back in Ghana when I would go to saloon to get my hair done, because of that, I started researching on how make my hair by myself. I would watch YouTube videos and read articles on how to maintain and grow healthy long hair. I discovered a lot of things. Some of the advices I followed helped, I was able to retain length but again I got to know that I had fine hair which made my hair look thin when relaxed and my hair length was not seen even though I had much growth and length. I always did researches on how to get thick relaxed hair but I got to know its about genetics so I said to myself, if my hair grows and I’m able to retain length, why don’t I go natural and use some of this methods I have discovered and learn more to get the thick and healthy hair I have always wanted.

After I decided to go natural

I started watching videos on how to transition from relaxed to natural hair but it took me a while to actually do the transition because I was afraid to start all over again. My thoughts were like, what if natural hair doesn’t work for me, what if my hair doesn’t grow back, what is my hair texture going to look, when am I going to achieve all this length again. This went on for a while. I will go on a post relaxer for about 3 to 4 months and go back to relax my hair again, until one day, when had kept my hair without relaxer for about 5 months I finally decided to do a big chop, that was in February 2017. I started all over again but this time with no relaxer.

I have to admit that this journey has been fun even though it requires a lot of time sometimes, but you know good things requires some good effort. Its even much fun because I keep on discovering new things about natural hair and I will say so far so good. I haven’t had any regrets, the only question I ask myself is why I didn’t start early hahaha, but all the same I know I did it at the right time. I am 1.5 year natural now and I’m impressed with the overall health and length of my hair.
